The Miami Open is the 2nd ATP Masters 1000 of the ATP Tennis season. Last year's champion Carlos Alcaraz just won the Indian Wells Masters and will be a big favourite at the 2023 Miami Masters too. Can he complete the Sunshine Double and win a second title at the tournament?

Here is a ranking of all the last champions of the Miami Open from 1985 to 2023. From Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi to Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz who will enter the tournament as the ATP world No 1.

The Miami Open is part of the ATP Masters 1000 series. Together with Indian Wells, the 3 clay court Masters in Montecarlo, Madrid and Rome as well as the other Hard Court tournaments in Canada, Cincinnati, Shanghai and Paris the Miami Masters is ranked in the 3rd highest position behind only the four Grand Slams and the season ending ATP Finals.

THE HISTORY OF THE MIAMI OPEN
Nowadays the second Masters 1000 event of the Tennis season, the Miami Open was founded in the 1980s with the aim of becoming the first big tournament of the calendar as the Australian Open was held in December at that time. Even though it never actually became the new 'fifth Major', the Miami Open remains one of the most prestigious tennis events in the world.

Tim Mayotte won the first edition in 1985 in an all American final. The late 80s saw several big tennis stars like Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander and Thomas Muster reach the final in Miami. In 1990 the tournament became part of what today is known as the ATP Masters 1000 series.
Just like the Indian Wells Masters it has a 96 players field nowadays. Winning the two Masters consecutively is known as a 'Sunshine Double'. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic won the Sunshine Double several times.

In 2004 the Miami Open gave the world the first ever match between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nadal defeated Federer in their first encounter, a year later the two would meet again in the 2005 Miami Open Final. This time it was Federer who won the match and the title. Rafael Nadal reached the Final of both Sunshine Double Masters several times but he never managed to win the title in Miami.
