How Your Clothes Can Save the Planet | Jess Montgomery | TEDxChilliwack |
|
The global clothing industry is contributing to climate change and mass-scale environmental degradation. But it is not just how our clothes are made that is the problem, it is the amount of clothing that is being produced—and purchased—on a daily basis that is destroying the planet. Jess Montgomery argues that we have the power to create a more sustainable clothing industry, and that this starts with taking responsibility for how and what you value. TEDxChilliwack 2018 took place on April 13, 2019 at G. W. Graham Theatre in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada. The theme of the event was "On Purpose". Learn more at http://tedxchilliwack.com. Jess Montgomery is the Founder and Executive Director of Think the World Differently, a nonprofit organization based in Vancouver that is leading ground up systems change in the clothing industry through behaviour change initiatives focused on reducing overconsumption. Jess is also a contributing writer for Not Just A Label.
Jess holds a BFA with Distinction in Art History from Concordia University, and a MA in the History and Theory of Contemporary Art from the San Francisco Art Institute, where she wrote her thesis on the role that fashion can play in perpetuating or challenging overconsumption. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx |
