Finland has become NATO's 31st member. The alliance's headquarters in Brussels has seen a day of ceremony and emotion. Finland's president described the occasion as historic - and NATO's Secretary general said the expansion shows that Russia's attempts to weaken the alliance have backfired.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg has also invited Ukrainian President Volodimyr Zelenskyy to the alliance's summit in July. Speaking after a meeting between the bloc's officials and a Ukrainian delegation in Brussels, he said NATO's door is open for Kyiv.
