The Russian attack came early on Friday with what residents say was the heaviest bombardment since the start of the war.

The attack focused on the town of Vovchansk, which is 5km from Ukraine's border with Russia.

The Russian forces reportedly advanced 1km before Ukrainian reinforcements held them off.
