Pro-Palestinian protesters pitched a handful of tents on the University of Washington campus in Seattle on Monday (April 29), joining other colleges across the U.S. in denouncing the war in Gaza. Protests over the conflict between Israel and Palestinians - and the response from administrators, politicians, faculty and students to the demonstrations - have roiled college campuses in recent weeks and divided the American public. Approximately two dozens students gathered around 8am local time (1500gmt) on Monday morning and pitched tents on the quad, next to University ‘no camping’ signs that appeared over the weekend. “We're seeing across this country people coming out by the thousands in solidarity with Palestine. This university, this city has long shown that they're willing to meet that moment." said Mathieu Chabaud, a pro-Palestinian protester and junior at the university. “I have faith that, I know that ultimately we're going to see these demands met by this university. It may take much more fighting on our part, but it's ultimately up to university administration to meet those demands, and the responsibility is on them at this point." A few pro-Israel protesters stopped by and filmed while tents were being erected, but no altercations occurred.
