"Thalapathy" is a remarkable 1991 Indian Tamil-language crime drama film crafted by the visionary Mani Ratnam, with production led by G. Venkateswaran. The audio rights were secured by Lahari Music for ₹7.2 million. The film's soundtrack earned a place in The Guardian's prestigious list of "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die." The track "Rakkamma Kaiya Thattu," sung by S. P. Balasubramanyam and Swarnalatha, clinched the 4th position among the BBC World's Top Ten Popular Songs of All-time. The song also found its way into the 2012 Bollywood movie "Agent Vinod," leading to legal actions taken by Lahari against the unauthorized use of the song by the film's producer, Saif Ali Khan. The recording of the song "Sundari" was executed in Mumbai with R. D. Burman's orchestra. Upon hearing Ilaiyaraaja's composition, the musicians were moved to such an extent that they collectively offered a standing ovation in respect.

In July 2011, D. Karthikeyan of The Hindu highly praised the film's background score, ranking it alongside other iconic works of Ilaiyaraaja such as "Mullum Malarum," "Uthiripookkal" (1979), "Moodu Pani" (1981), "Moondram Pirai" (1982), and "Nayakan" (1987).

All lyrics were penned by Vaali, and the music was masterfully composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
