video thumbnail
In this talk, organised by the School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, Shruti Kapila, Associate Professor in the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge, and the Director of Studies at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge discusses her recent book: Violent Fraternity: Indian Political Thought in the Global Age (Princeton University Press). In conversation with Chandler Hatch, Assistant Professor of Philosophy, School of Arts and Sciences, Ahmedabad University, she highlights how leading figures like Gandhi, Ambedkar, Iqbal, Tilak and Savarkar theorised the scope of the political and the scope of sovereignty. The talk brings out the contexts in which such definitions and redefinitions emerged, and their influence on the nature of political violence for the modern global era. This conversation is a provocation to reconceptualise India as the centre where modern political language was remade.
