The new Astra is 4,374mm long and 1,860mm wide. It is only 4.0 mm longer than the model it replaces. The wheelbase has increased by 13 mm to reach 2,675 mm. If its look is muscular and well asserted, the new Astra retains a practical trunk: with its adjustable floor, it still offers the driver and four passengers a luggage volume of 1250 liters when the rear seats are folded down.

The new Astra is based on the third generation of the highly flexible EMP2 multi-energy platform, incorporating Opel's DNA from the outset of development. This means that the handling is both serene and dynamic and that the new model - like all Opels - is β€œAutobahnproof”, highway-proof. In other words, the ability to ride at high speed was a primary development goal.

The steering and lateral stiffness of the chassis - McPherson strut suspensions at the front, torsion bar at the rear - were designed to achieve great yaw control (damping of movement around the horizontal axis). Under braking, the new model offers very powerful decelerations and remains very stable in bends as in a straight line. The torsional stiffness of the new Astra is 14% higher than that of the previous model.

The architecture of the new Astra also incorporates the latest automated driver assistance systems. In addition to the multifunction camera located in the windshield, the technological baggage includes four cameras scattered around the body (one at the front, one at the rear and one on each side), five radar sensors (one at the front and one at each corner), as well as ultrasonic sensors at the front and rear.

Cameras and sensors are integrated with e-horizon connectivity within Intelli-Drive 2.0 , which extends the range of cameras and radar. This allows the system to adjust speed when cornering, make speed recommendations and make semi-automated lane changes. The detection of the presence of hands on the steering wheel guarantees that the driver maintains control of the vehicle at all times.

Rear cross-traffic alert, long-range detection of presence in blind spots and active lane positioning, which keeps the car in the center of its lane, make up the Intelli-Drive 1.0 .

The long list of automated driver assistance systems also includes adaptive cruise control, which increases or decreases speed to follow the vehicle in front, without exceeding the set speed. It can brake the car to a complete stop if necessary. With the automatic transmission, the car restarts automatically thanks to the β€œStop & Go” system.

Opel's AGR ergonomic seats have a long-standing reputation for quality that has won them numerous awards. The new Astra continues this long tradition. Certified by Aktion Gesunder RΓΌcken e. V . (association for back health), the seats of the new Astra benefit from an implantation lowered by 12 mm compared to the previous model, which further reinforces the feeling of sporty driving. They guarantee a good posture, the density of the foam of the seats being optimized according to the definitions "Sport" or "Comfort".

The AGR front seats in the new Astra are the best in the compact class and optionally offer a very wide range of settings, from power recline to electro-pneumatic lumbar support. In Nappa leather finish, they even offer ventilation, driver massage and heating both rear and front. Also available are seats upholstered in elegant Alcantara. The new Opel Astra marks the dawn of a new era - and shows what Opel means by the term β€œgreenovation”: the pleasure of driving while respecting the environment. And it starts with the supply of engines. The next generation of the bestseller in the compact category will not only be electrified for the first time: it will be the first Opel available as a plug-in hybrid with two performance levels. And, one year after its market launch, it will also be offered in Astra-e, an all-electric version. Versions equipped with high-efficiency gasoline and diesel engines combined with friction-optimized six- or eight-speed manual gearboxes will also be available when order books open in mid-October.
