Eighth time's a charm

If you do something eight times, the chances are you become reasonably proficient at it. Take the Vauxhall Astra for example. This new 2022 Astra is the eighth incarnation of Vauxhall's compact family hatchback, spanning a period of more that 40 years between first and last, and to look at its sharp styling, you'd think it must be the best, most polished, most compelling version yet.

Of course, not everything is always as it seems. Thanks to Vauxhall's recent acquisition by motoring giant Stellantis, the latest Astra actually shares more in common with Peugeot than it does with any other Astra. It's built on the same platform as the latest 308, and comes with all the same technology.

In this CarGurus UK review video Vicky Parrot travels to the car's international launch in Portugal to try out the plug-in hybrid version of the new Astra, which teams a 1.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to produce 178bhp and an all-electric range of almost 40 miles.
