In this one, I have a sit-down conversation with Matt Flamm, Professor of Philosophy at Rockford University - and a fellow alumni of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. We focus particularly on a thinker Matt specializes in, the Spanish-American philosopher Georges Santayana. We discuss a number of topics, including some of Santayana's key ideas and contributions in philosophy, where he fits in with American figures like C.S. Pierce, William James, and John Dewey, and his connections with Spanish authors like Miguel de Unamuno and Ortega Y Gasset. We also engage in some dialogue about the history of philosophy, what doing good history of philosophy requires, and contemporary trends in philosophy and in academia more broadly.
