Self Directed Study in Philosophy | G.W.F. Hegel's Philosophy | How To Study: Sadler's Advice

video thumbnail
Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel is among the most important philosophers in western philosophy. He contributes to ethics and moral philosophy, political and social theory, metaphysics, philosophy of religion, epistemology, philosophy of science, aesthetics, philosophy of history, and a number of other fields. Some of the key concepts he develops are the distinction between conceptual thinking and representation, the dialectical development of history and consciousness, the roles of mediation and contradiction. He engages with his contemporaries in the German Idealism movement, as well as with a host of thinkers from previous philosophical movements and traditions. Hegel ends up being massively influential upon later philosophers and movements, who reinterpret or push back against his thought.

This is the ninth in a new series of videos, providing advice, suggestions, and information for students and lifelong learners intending to engage in self-directed study of G.W.F Hegel. I discuss why Hegel would be useful, important, and worthwhile to study. I also suggest which of his books would be best to start with, and what other works you might move on to after those. There are motivations and methods important for understanding Hegel's own concepts and perspective, and I discuss keeping those in mind as you engage in study. I also suggest what problems or concerns you don't need to be overly concerned with when beginning study of Hegel (though you might find it useful to consider them later).
