Yoga is a group of spiritual, physical and mental practices that originated in our homeland India and dates back to almost 3000 BC. These ancient practices ensure a sense of holistic well being. In today’s hectic lifestyle, we are faced with an avalanche of problems that affect our physical, mental and spiritual health in different ways. But the good news is that if we take just a step back and reflect, we can find a solution to each of our problems in the practices of Yoga.

In this yoga session, Yoga Guru Diksha Lalwani who has been practising and teaching yoga for the last 10 years shares the right way to do a basic Surya Namaskar to lose weight. If you are suffering from a chronic ailment or an injury, then you should take advice from your family physician before beginning these asanas.

What is Surya Namaskar?
Surya Namaskar, Salute to the Sun or Sun Salutation, is a practice in yoga as exercise incorporating a flow sequence of some twelve gracefully linked asanas. The basic sequence involves moving from a standing position into Downward Dog and Upward Dog poses and then back to the standing position, but many variations are possible. The set of 12 asanas is dedicated to the solar deity Surya. In some Indian traditions, the positions are each associated with a different mantra.
Typically the number of repetitions start with 2-3, advance to 12 and multiples of twelve; 108 rounds is a hallmark of mastery of Surya Namaskar and is done for reasons of purification.
Variant sequences called Chandra Namaskar (Moon Salutation) have also been created.
