After their lampooning on an episode of South Park they had to contend with the news their popularity has dropped in the US since the publication of Spare. This will not have been part of the plan, argues the Daily Mail’s Diary Editor Richard Eden. ‘He will have hoped that the publication of his book will have increased his popularity, it will have given the readers an insight and made him more popular,’ he tells Palace Confidential. ‘So the fact that it’s plummeting, really is interesting.’ The week’s developments highlight the challenges at the heart of the ‘Montecito Project’ – that’s the view of historian and broadcaster Dr Tessa Dunlop. ‘[Harry’s] outed himself as really a royalist, he can’t get away from it, he doesn’t want to blow up the institution, he says himself in interviews,’ she tells the programme. ‘So there’s this feeling of contradiction at the heart of his thesis – what’s it all about Harry? And I think he doesn’t even understand that. It’s very very hard to walk away from the Royal Family.’
