Australia will upgrade its land warfare capabilities under a roughly $2.5-billion deal that will provide its army with 75 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks, together with armored support vehicles.

The decision is part of a broader initiative that also includes plans to introduce nuclear-powered attack submarines, as well as long-range hypersonic weapons and armed aerial drones.


The M1A2 SEPv3 represents a significant improvement over the Australian Army’s current M1A1 variants, 59 of which were acquired second-hand from the U.S. Army and Marine Corps in 2006 and succeed Cold War-era Leopard 1s.
