2021 Live Review 4 | AP U.S. History | Period 5 (1844 – 1877)

video thumbnail
In this AP Daily: Live Review session for AP US History, we will review the era of mid-19th century expansion through the Civil War and Reconstruction, explore data-based SAQs, and develop skills in structuring and evidencing DBQs.

We'll examine and summarize the historical developments of sectional crisis, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. We will review the concept of Manifest Destiny and the impact and consequences of the Mexican-American War. We will explore the patterns of escalation and failure of compromises which culminated in the Civil War. We will review the conflict itself and recap its impact and consequences. We will then examine the implementation, achievements, and failures of Reconstruction. This session’s exam component focus will be the document-based question (DBQ) and short-answer question (SAQ). We will examine and explain the SAQ scoring rubric for data-based prompts, and provide a tutorial in DBQ sourcing of evidence, in terms of how to put a primary source’s Historical Situation, Audience, Purpose, or Point of View to work on behalf of supporting an argument or claim. This session’s APUSH writing skill focus will build upon previous skill developments in thesis and context and connect them to preparation strategies for essay structuring and the accumulation/use of evidence.
