This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.

This Core Concept video focuses on David Hume's work, the Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, and discusses the principle that allows us to step beyond the confines of present sense-perception and past memory in "matters of fact" or "real existence". This is the principle of custom or habit, which inclines us to assume that the future will resemble the past. This principle, for Hume, lies at the basis of our association of ideas along the lines of cause and effect.
