Professor Judith Shapiro from the London School of Economics talk about her insights of why, now more than ever, big data will help to reveal gender inequality in the world around us. Judith Shapiro was Chief of the Transition Economies Section, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, and then Professor at Moscow’s graduate New Economic School, before returning to LSE Economics . where she had received her PhD, to concentrate on the development of the next generation of economists, undergraduates in LSE’s Economics Department. She has won three teaching prizes, one national, in that role. The author of three co-authored books on the transition to the market in Eastern Europe, and research work on unemployment, gender, high inflation and mortality male and female, she was an adviser to the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and a member of the Macroeconomic and Finance Unit (“Sachs team”) advising the Russian Ministry of Finance in the chaos of 1993-1994.. Her study of male/female cognitive differences arises from her innovative Economics of Gender course, EC-208, at the LSE-PKU annual August Summer School.
