But, what can you tell from the name Portuguese Man O’War? I mean, besides the fact that the animal will kill you if given the chance. The animal is aptly named after a Portuguese warship: the Portuguese Man O’War uses a mixture of carbon monoxide and air to sail and drags behind its long tentacles. The tentacles contain numerous nematocysts which deliver fatal stings. Powerful enough to kill fish and even humans. Beaches would typically put up signs all over to alert the public of the animal, but if you ever get stung by one it can cause severe dermatitis. The wound resembles those caused by whips and needs to be treated immediately, or else could turn fatal. You definitely don’t want to mess with an animal named after a literal warship! Puss Caterpillar Before the Southern Flannel Moth can spread its wings and fly far, far away, it spends a decent portion of its life living as a Puss Caterpillar. The animal, aptly named owing to its grayish-white and golden-ish appearance, is considered endemic in certain areas. Whenever there’s an infestation of the larvae, the department of health and disease control will issue a public warning. Why? Because while this furry little thing looks like it's guilty solely of being an eyesore, it can actually irritate the skin. We’re not talking about an itch or a rash here - when contact is made with the ‘fur’ of a puss caterpillar, the skin is left irritated to the point that it feels like you either broke a limb or burned yourself with something white-hot! The Puss Caterpillar is found mainly in parts of the Eastern United States such as Virginia and Florida. If you see something that looks like it shouldn’t be touched - don’t touch it!
