Pink Fairy Armadillo

Don't let their names fool you, these animals won’t actually turn a pumpkin into a carriage for you to go meet your prince charming. But hey, they look super cute. The smallest members of the armadillo family, the pink fairy armadillos are beautifully bizarre animals. These solitary, desert-adapted animals can be found in the central regions of Argentina. The adorable creature measures less than 5 inches in length and weighs less than 120 grams. Their small stature allows them to dig through the sand with ease, earning them the nickname “sand swimmers”.

And as if these animals weren’t rebellious enough, unlike other armadillos, the pink fairy’s shell isn’t attached to its body. Instead, it is connected to its body via a membrane that runs along the spinal column. Just under the shell, the armadillo has vessels that pump blood into its shell to help regulate body temperature. Its skin is so thin that blood vessels show through and give the armadillo its iconic pink color. Doesn’t seem so magical anymore, does it?

Believe it or not, we've actually known about these strange creatures since 2002 but they've only recently started to gain popularity. These elusive sharks are more formally known as Chimeras and very little is known about them since it’s almost impossible to spot one of them since they live in freezing cold depths of about 2000 to 6000 feet.

Despite their name, ghost sharks are not members of the shark family; rather, they are a type of fish with a skeleton composed of cartilage rather than bone. This is absolutely vital for them to be able to survive at the depths at which they live since they won't break down under high pressure. However, just like sharks, they do deposit egg capsules, commonly referred to as mermaid purses, on the ocean floor.
