Coming on the heels of Hyundai’s EV crossover the Ioniq 5, is the Ioniq 6. I’m in Korea getting a look at it and I’m going to tell you everything I know. Well, almost everything.


This streamliner, as Hyundai is calling it, looks spectacular. At least I think it does. People aren’t buying sedans anymore! Pshaw! They should. Look at this thing. It’s got clean aerodynamic shape, elegant lines and character, and looks fantastic.

Buyers will get options including 18- or 20-inch wheels, and boy, we love the crazy wheel designs that Hyundai comes up with.

Tires are specially developed for EV usage and added efficiency. Every mile counts.

There’s a design language that carries over from the Ioniq 5 here and that’s with this pixel treatment. It shows up on the exterior but also on the inside.


The interior is actually quite a marvel. Hyundai has put some really nice thought into a driver and passengers experience. The cabin feels spacious for such a small footprint. There is thoughtful storage that’s generous like this cubby for a rather large bag.

The window controls are on the center console which allows the doors to be free of clutter, instead they use creative fabrics, textures, patterns and materials to elevate the space.


You really get the sense in here that design matters.

The 24- inch total driver information and infotainment screen is more than generous and well-designed within the dash. CarPlay and Android Auto will be standard.


Space in the second row is generous when it comes to your legs. No transmission tunnel means lots of leg room. The sloping roofline might be a bit constricting for someone taller, but for an average person, it’s plenty.


Optional Relaxation Comfort Seats are available and specifically made for Hyundai’s EV models. They’re 30% thinner and we all also, helping make the Ioniq 6 even more efficient.


Overall the interior of the Ioniq 6 is accommodating, comfortable and stylish. This looks like a more expensive car that it is, or at least that I expect it will be because pricing isn’t available yet.


The Ioniq 6 rides on the same E-GMA platform that the 5 does and at its most powerful gets a 77.4 kWh battery. The standard model will get a 54 kWh battery so will get less range than the estimated max of around 350 miles on one charge. Just a note that this number is my best guess with the 621 km number we got for the European speced Ioniq 6. But the real range will be forthcoming.


Using a DC fast charger with 350 kw charging capabilities the Ioniq 6 will be able to go from 10 – 80% charge in 18 minutes. That is definitely getting closer to Lyn road trip pit stop times.

You can also get a Vehicle to Load option that lets you charge other things outside your car. No one’s suggesting you’ll go camping in this, but if you do you can run a fridge.


The Ioniq 6 boasts a .21 drag coefficient, which is second only to the Mercedes EQS and Tesla. That’s some excellent competition.

I did get a chance to give the Ioniq 6 a test drive, but I’m not allowed to tell you about it yet because they told me not to.

So, there you go, you know almost everything I do now.

Which means, there will be more to know about the Ioniq 6 as it heads into production later this year and becomes available for the 2023 model year. Stick around.
