Home Reef Volcano Eruption Update; New Volcanic Islands Expands, Effusive Eruption |
|
The world's newest volcanic island rose above sea level on September 10th in the nation of Tonga. This occurred not due to the eruption of Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai, but rather a shallow submarine volcano known as Home Reef. Within a matter of 12 hours, a new volcanic island has rose above the ocean surface. The island has now grown to more than 200 meters wide, and is continuing to expand. In all likelihood, this new island will remain for some time because it is made out of lava instead of ash.
GPS Coordinates of the Home Reef volcano: 18.992°S, 174.775°W Special Thanks to: Shane Cronin, @scronin70 (Twitter) for granting me permission to use his spectacular volcanic sunset photos.
