US, Taliban keep open door for fresh negotiations

video thumbnail
The US and the Taliban have decided to leave the door open to fresh negotiations, after US President Donald Trump abruptly cancelled peace talks. In a series of tweets, Mr Trump said he had been planning to meet Taliban leaders at his Camp David presidential retreat, but he called off the summit after a Taliban attack killed a US soldier. The announcement leaves in doubt a draft peace plan, which would have seen thousands of US troops withdrawn from Afghanistan in 2020.
