The Low FODMAP Diet | Doctor Explains IBS, Bloating & Gas Treatment |

In todayβs episode of Dr Nora, I take you through the FODMAP diet which has been scientifically proven to help those suffering with IBS symptoms on the guidance of their medical doctor and dietician.
WHAT IS IBS? IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a condition that affects the large bowel which can cause some uncomfortable symptoms. Such symptoms include, tummy pain, bloating, loose motions or flatulence. It can affect up to 3 in 10 Australians and can be caused by certain triggers, such as stress, caffeine or certain medications to name a few examples. It is important that this condition is diagnosed by your medical doctor as other conditions may also present in a similar way. FODMAP FODMAP stands for Fermented Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols. It pertains to certain groups of sugars that are poorly absorbed in the intestine leading to flatulence, bloating and cramps if consumed. Often those with IBS will be advised to try and follow a low FODMAP diet to reduce the incidence of symptoms on the guidance of their doctor or dietician. Low FODMAP foods include bananas, blueberries, red bell peppers, pumpkin, rice, oats, lactose free milk and tofu. Non-marinated meats are also considered low FODMAP. High FODMAP foods include apples, mangoes, milk from cows, soft cheeses, broccoli, chickpeas and mushrooms. Usually a diet including low FODMAPs will be advised for a period of 2-6 weeks, after which, some food groups can be re-introduced as a challenge for up to 3 days. If symptoms persist with the food group then that particular food is to be avoided. It is vital to seek the guidance of a medical practitioner, as removing a food group from the diet may lead to imbalances in vitamins and minerals. Sometimes, IBS is transient and so you may not need carry out such a diet for a prolonged period of time.
