If War Thunder's T-80s Were Historically Accurate (Redux) |

As the T-64 main battle tank continued to experience issues with its development, the Soviet military began looking at alternatives options. One such option was to take the basic layout of a T-64, give it a gas turbine engine, and make some minor tweaks. This new tank was called Object 219, and though it greatly improved on the T-64's automotive performance, it presented a number of its own issues. The engine was prohibitively expensive, went through a large amount of fuel, and was fairly unreliable, at least when compared to conventional diesel engines. The Object 219 seemed to be doomed, but this changed when the Minister of Defense died and was replaced by Dmitriy Ustinov, who was convinced that gas turbine tanks were the way of the future. On his orders, Object 219 was rushed into service as the T-80 despite its lingering issues. The T-80 was improved as time went on, but it was not produced in great numbers due to its prohibitive cost. The engine was by the far biggest cause for this. A diesel engined variant, the T-80UD, was produced to alleviate this but did not see widespread use. Variants include the T-80U, T-80UK, and T-80BVM.
