Demetri Martin's Puzzle-Like Approach to Comedy (featuring Dan O.)

video thumbnail
Demetri Martin! One of the most intelligent and interesting comics or a twee, nerdy, try-hard? Maybe both? Spoiler alert, I think there's a lot to love about Demetri and his comedy. He's easy to make fun of -- saying your favorite comedian is Demetri Martin is sorta like saying your favorite subject is math -- but he's there's so much to learn from him and his fascinating career trajectory.

Demetri Martin was my first favorite stand-up back in the late 00s, but he seems to have faded a bit from the comedy landscape. For the uninitiated, Demetri doesn't do traditional stand-up comedy that you might be used to, instead, he tells short jokes and one-liners, in the vein of comics like Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, or basically any comedian before 1955. In addition to his jokes, Demetri has a habit of bringing all of his hobbies onstage with him, which can include a large pad of his drawings, a guitar, harmonica, poems, three-dimensional crossword puzzles, photography, even clothes he made himself for the show. Today, let's focus on the main things that Demetri has going for him and why we can't overlook his place in comedy. So let's dive in.
